What Is a Bone Marrow Transplant?
A bone marrow transplant (hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) is a procedure in which diseased or damaged bone marrow is replaced with healthy stem cells.
Which Conditions Is It Used For?
- Acute and chronic leukemias
- Lymphomas (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin)
- Multiple myeloma
- Aplastic anemia
- Sickle cell disease
- Certain genetic disorders
Types of Transplant
Autologous Transplant: The patient's own stem cells are used; commonly preferred for lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
Allogeneic Transplant: Stem cells from a compatible donor are used. Siblings, relatives, or volunteer donors found through bone marrow banks may serve as sources.
